Spring teams enjoying successful season

Posted: 04/22/2011

Thoroughbred spring teams are enjoying an outstanding season, with several vying for league and national championships. The riding team qualified for a return trip to the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association National Show after winning the IHSA Zone competition. Skidmore, which won the 2010 IHSA National Championship, is hoping for a repeat in early May in Lexington, Kent.

The golf team, ranked 12th nationally, earned a trip to its 25th straight NCAA Division III tournament in Greensboro, N.C., May 10-13.

The men’s and women's tennis teams have both been regionally ranked all season, with the women’s national rank as high as 19. Both teams are playing for return trips to the NCAA championships.

Men's and women's lacrosse are battling for Liberty League playoff bids. The men were ranked as high as 11th nationally after a six-game win streak that included victories over nationally ranked RPI and Dickinson. The women’s team is enjoying its first winning season since 2006 with league wins over William Smith and St. Lawrence.

With 13 games to play, the baseball team neared the 20-win mark for a program-record fifth straight year. The defending Liberty League champions took three of four from Union in late April. The team’s pitching staff was ranked among the top programs nationally, with senior Nick Laracuente a perfect 7-0 on the mound with a 1.00 ERA. The softball team is closing in on repeat trip to the Liberty League tournament after a 10-12 start.

Weather has hampered the start of the men's and women's crew seasons, but the teams are ready for their May championship events. The New York State championships are in late April at Whitney Point, N.Y.
