Celebration Weekend

Posted: 10/17/2011

Nearly 600 families enjoyed Celebration Weekend Oct. 14-16, coming from as far away as China and Turkey.

Among the highlights of the weekend: the third annual Career Jam on Friday afternoon, where students networked with nearly 50 parents, alumni and other volunteers; Saturday morning’s President’s Hour, where Philip A. Glotzbach and other senior administrators discussed the state of the College and answered questions and Sunday’s Jazz Brunch in the Dining Hall.

Eighty runners and 30 walkers participated in Sunday’s 5K race, raising a record $505 for the Saratoga Springs Economic Opportunity Council’s fund for needy families. On the playing fields, the men’s soccer team dropped a 1-0 contest to Utica College, while the fifth-ranked women’s field hockey team defeated Wheaton 6-1.

But it was Saturday night’s “Under the Big Top” – spotlighting the talents of Skidmore students -- that drew the biggest crowd of the weekend to the Williamson Sports Center.

Emceed by Ben Jurney ’14, the show opened with the College’s only all male a capella group, the Bandersnatchers, who have been singing at Skidmore for 35 years. New to the show this year, the UJIMA Step Team was a crowd-pleaser as they stepped, chanted and clapped through a routine. Other performers included Skidmore a cappella groups The Sonneteers, the oldest student organization on campus; The Accents; The Drastic Measures, and The Dynamics.

Other highlights included performances by the Irish Dance Club, accompanied by Leland Martin ’14 on the fiddle; a show-stopping solo from “Cabaret” by Alison Schaufler ’14, member of Skidmore’s Cabaret Troupe; an imaginative  performance on buckets and trashcans by PULSE! led by Adam Becker ’12, and the grand finale hip-hop number by the Breakbeats.
