Skidmore Saratoga Classic Horse Show

Posted: 06/15/2012

The 15th annual Skidmore Saratoga Classic Horse Show is currently under way on the Union Avenue grounds across the street from the Saratoga Race Course.

More than 500 horses are registered for the event, which is scheduled over two weeks. Classic I takes place from Tuesday, June 12, through Sunday, June 17, and Classic II is set for Wednesday, June 20, through Sunday, June 24. The highlight of the first week’s action is the return of the International Hunter Derby on Saturday, June 23. The derby will feature $15,000 in prizes to be awarded to riders who successfully compete in a challenging course involving complex jumps. Juniors, amateurs, and professionals are welcome in the event, which starts at about 4 p.m.

This year for the first time the Skidmore Saratoga Classic has collaborated with the New York Racing Association, the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association, and the New York Thoroughbred Breeders Inc. to offer Take2, a thoroughbred division. The goal of the program is to develop second career opportunities for Thoroughbreds that no longer race.  The Skidmore show is the second this year allowing the Take2 option following a successful inauguration at the Garden State Horse Show in May.

With beautiful weather predicted for the next week, the Skidmore Saratoga Classic should draw good crowds. Show spokesperson Ali Sirota knows why. “There’s something for everyone here,” she explained. “With three rings of competition, there is always something to watch. Spectators needing a break can visit a wonderful array of vendors on site. We have a lot on the premises and are looking forward to welcoming fans of all ages,” she added.
