The Press & The Presidential Race: Truth & Lies in Politics
Robert Boyers, Professor in English and Editor of Salmagundi
This mini-course will consider the role of the press in presidential elections where the outcome depends, to a considerable degree, on the public's understanding of major issues. More specifically the course will focus on outright lies and distortions promoted by current presidential candidates and the unwillingness of the mainstream press to expose distortion and to help citizens to differentiate between truth and lie. Particular examples will be circulated and discussed in the class.

From Progressive Pioneer to Nativist Crackdown: The Transformation of Immigration Policy in Oklahoma
Robert Turner, Associate Professor of Government
The debate over immigration has devolved from the national government to the states. In 2011, states considered over 1,500 bills and enacted 246 laws concerning immigrants. While the media has focused on punitive laws in Arizona and Alabama, states are actually more likely to pass legislation expanding the rights of immigrants than restricting them. Sometimes states are welcoming to the new immigrants, other times less so. Consider the peculiar case of Oklahoma. In 2003, Oklahoma was one of only 4 states in the nation to provide in-state tuition to unauthorized immigrants. Three years later, Oklahoma reversed itself and passed the most punitive anti-immigration state law in the nation. This radical transformation happened despite scarce evidence that unauthorized Latinos were harming natives. Oklahoma’s unemployment rate was only four percent, and unauthorized immigrants were only one to two percent of the population. The answer, I argue, in a particular political constellation of institutions, ideas, and interests.

Rich, Free, and Miserable: Understanding the Failure of Success in America
With John Brueggemann, the Quadracci Chair of Social Responsibility
In his new book, Rich, Free and Miserable, John Brueggemann shows that the growing pressures Americans feel to work, compete, and consume have undermined our engagement in meaningful relationships and resulted in a widespread moral crisis. The only way this crisis can be resolved – and the attendant problems of narcissism, greed, and waste – is to reconceive the civil institutions that hold communities together. Amidst the power of expanding market logic, however, the human resources of anger and hope among ordinary people suggest such heartening possibilities are viable.
