Corres
pondence between JM Coetzee & Arabella Kurtz (Issue 166-167):
Subject: Collaboration
Dear Arabella,I am relieved to hear that you too do not like stage performances.
Before we talk about anything as mundane as money I think we should see whether we are compatible. Let me make three observations about myself. (1) I was an academic most of my working life and when I talk about literature I tend to talk like an academic. (2) When I have written a book I put it behind me and don't like to revisit it. (3) I never interpret my own books. I leave that to readers and critics.
By all means send me your reflections and I will try to respond to at least some of them. If it becomes plain that we are getting nowhere, or are growing irritated with each other, let us call the whole thing off. If we feel we are making progress, then we can talk about fees, publication outlets etc.
Best wishes,
John
