Drawing In

For over thirty years, Edward Mayer has been transforming space and ordering perception through large-scale sculptures that use simple geometry and everyday materials, redefining spatial relationships in response to the architectural elements of a given site. Mayer's recent works introduce inherently transparent materials, such as pre-fabricated wire shelving, wire fencing and wire tomato plant cylinders. The repetition and transformation of these modular/linear forms enable the viewer to now enter and move through Mayer's installations from a variety of perspectives.

Mayer recently had his second solo show at Zabriskie Gallery in New York, and a survey of his work was recently installed at the University Art Museum in Albany, New York. He has had solo exhibits at the Nassau County Museum, Roslyn Harbor, New York; the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University, Waltham, Massachusetts; the Kunsthalle, Darmstadt, Germany; the Mattress Factory, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Zolla-Liebermann Gallery, Chicago, Illinois; Madison Art Center, Madison, Wisconsin; the São Paulo Bienal, São Paulo, Brazil; Socrates Sculpture Park, Long Island City, New York; and the New York State Museum in Albany, New York. He is the recipient of numerous awards and grants including two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships and a NYFA Fellowship in Sculpture. Edward Mayer is the Sculpture Area Chair at the University at Albany, State University of New York.
