A Resolution of the Arts and Sciences Lecture Series
(All lectures held at Davis Auditorium in Palamountain Hall)
Tuesday, Sept. 27, 5PM: Anthropology Professor, archeological artist, and McArthur Foundation grant recipient Heather Hurst speaks about her work illustrating ancient Maya murals at the Bonampak site in Chiapas, Mexico. A three year project incorporating extensive data, including imaging techniques, pigment analysis, and archeological records, Hurst worked with Yale University Art History Professor Mary Miller and artist Leonard Ashby to create half-size watercolor illustrations, which will soon be on permanent display at the Yale University Art Gallery.
Tuesday, Oct. 4, 5PM: Psychology Professor Flip Phillips speaks about experiments done in his laboratory studying human perception of three-dimensional shapes. These experiments make use of a 3-D scanner and a 3-D printer (which 'builds' three-dimensional shapes), and draw inspiration from the techniques and tricks artists use to represent dimensional objects.
These experimental shapes sometimes become aesthetic objects in their own right.
Tuesday, Oct.11, 7PM: SUNY Potsdam Art Professor and 1992 Skidmore alumnus Doug Schatz will present and discuss his work. At Skidmore, Schatz was a double major in art and geology. He has been interested in fire as a shaping force in our world, both in physical and social sciences, and he makes -and burns - sculptures as a part of his body of work. He will be overseeing a sculpture 'burn' immediately following the lecture, at an outdoor location (on campus site TBA.)
Tuesday, October 18, 5PM: Art Professor John Galt will speak about melting iron in the cupola furnace. The talk will include a brief history of iron casting; the anatomy of the cupola furnace and how it works; and the project of designing and building the cupola furnace, which was done at Skidmore. The talk will be followed by a demonstration of an iron pour using the cupola furnace in the sculpture room of the Saisselin Art Building.
