Update - September 2009
Dear Friends of the Schick Art Gallery,
Glad tidings from Schick Art Gallery! We send updates to our devoted following to keep you abreast of recent goings on.
In our current exhibit, an intersection of art and science, Nathalie Miebach uses basket-weaving techniques to make brightly colored intricate sculptures that articulate scientific observations or theories. She translates scientific data into three-dimensional structures. The artist’s lecture will take place September 22 at 6 pm in Davis Auditorium, Palamountain Hall. This is a date change from the originally scheduled lecture, due to the Yom Kippur holiday on September 28. We regret any inconvenience.
As you may know, Schick Art Gallery director and Skidmore professor of painting for over thirty years, David Miller retired in December 2008 to parties and warm wishes from his many admirers. He has been working in his studio and exhibiting widely, just as he intended. He remains active in the community and frequents Schick Art Gallery receptions, so you’ll be sure to stay in touch.
Assistant to the director for the past seven years, Mary Kathryn Jablonski, now runs the Schick Art Gallery with the gallery committee, several Skidmore studio art faculty, as it has been run in the past. On the reverse you will find the gallery schedule for the upcoming academic year. A few changes to note include the time of receptions and duration of exhibits.
Over the course of the past year, the gallery eliminated hour-long previews before our hour-long receptions. We’d like to go back to longer receptions, from 5:30-7:00 pm, giving everyone ample time to join in the festivities and meet and congratulate exhibiting artists. We’ll also be extending the duration of some of our exhibitions. In the past, we changed our shows every four weeks. At times we heard that visitors from Albany and out of town actually missed shows because of this quick turnover. During 2009-2010 most exhibits will be on display for approximately eight weeks. This will permit viewers to have a chance to see and explore the exhibitions thoroughly.
A few highlights for the upcoming season include NYC artist Dawn Clements as juror for the Annual Skidmore Student Exhibition and an exhibit in the spring titled The Figure Five Ways. Also look for a book artist/printmaker this coming summer! We look forward to seeing you soon and often.
Sincerely,
Mary Kathryn Jablonski Kate Leavitt
