Area of Specialization:
Sport studies

Current Research Interests:
Professor Segrave’s current research interests are primarily research in the sociology of sport. More specifically, his main areas of study encompass the Olympic Games, the socio-linguistics of sport, and women and sport.

Denise L. Smith
Professor of Exercise Science;
Chair, Exercise Science Program;
Class of 1961 Term Professor
Ph.D., University of Illinois
M.S., University of Illinois
B.S., Houghton College
Sports & Recreation Center 237
T 518 580-5389
F 518 580-8356
dsmith@skidmore.edu

Area of Specialization:
Exercise physiology

Books Published:
Exercise Physiology: for Health, Fitness, and Performance. Benjamin Cummings, (2003)

Instructor’s Manual for Exercise Physiology: for Health, Fitness, and Performance. Benjamin Cummings, (2003)

Theoretical and Applied Experiments in Exercise Physiology. Benjamin Cummings, (2003)

Current Research Interests:
Professor Smith’s current research interest focuses on cardiovascular responses to the combined stress of strenuous exercise and heat strain, particularly among firefighters. Her studies have documented the extent of physiological disruption in cardiovascular variables, blood chemistry, fluid balance, hormonal and immunological  factors and various  perceptual responses. Her research is now focused on hemostasis, the balance of blood clot formation and dissolution. The disruption of atherosclerotic plaque and subsequent clot formation is the primary cause of myocardial infarctions in the general population.

Associate Professors

Patricia C. Fehling
Associate Professor of Exercise Science;
Director of Human Performance Lab
B.S., Northern Illinois University
M.S. Northern Illinois University
Ph.D., University of Illinois
Sports & Recreation Center 241
T 518 580-5376
F 518 580-8356
pfehling@skidmore.edu

Area of Specialization:
Exercise physiology

Current Research Interests:
Professor Fehling’s primary interest is in the area human bone mineral density and the interaction with physical activity. In particular, Professor Fehling’s work has examined the effect of physical activity on the young athlete or dancer. Additionally, she has examined the use of physical activity monitoring devices in a variety of populations.

Paul J. Arciero
Associate Professor of Exercise Science;
Men’s Varsity Tennis Coach
B.S., Central Connecticut State University
M.S., Purdue University, Biological Sciences/Exercise Physiology
M.S., University of Vermont, Nutritional Sciences
D.P.E., Springfield College
Postdoctoral Fellowship, Washington University School of Medicine, Section of Applied Physiology
Sports & Recreation Center 242
T 518-580-5366
F 518-580-8356
parciero@skidmore.edu

Current Research Interests:
Professor Arciero’s research interests include the influence of nutritional and physical activity intervention on energy metabolism, body composition, glucose tolerance, and cardiovascular disease risk in healthy and diseased populations. Professor Arciero obtains both internal and external funding for his research, and regularly collaborates and publishes with students on various research topics. At present, his primary focus is evaluating the effectiveness of different macronutrient rations and exercise training interventions on body composition, energy metabolism and markers of cardiovascular risk and inflammation in middle aged overweight/obese men and women.

Assistant Professor

Thomas H. Reynolds
Assistant Professor of Exercise Science
B.S., M.S., Ithaca College
Department of Pharmacology, University of Virginia
Ph.D., University of Maryland
Postdoctoral: Howard Hughes Medical Institute, University of Pennsylvania; Institute of Gerontology, University of Michigan
Sports and Recreation Center 242
T 518-580-8349
F 518-580-8356
treynold@skidmore.edu

Research Interests:
Professor Reynolds’ primary research is in the area of insulin action and insulin signal transduction in skeletal muscle, the primary tissue for glucose disposal. He is specifically interested in the cellular mechanisms that are responsible for type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance as well as how exercise training alleviates insulin resistance.
