Sociology classes (Fall 2006 SO 226 Social Research Analysis students and 2004 SO 226 Social Research Analysis students)

Tips for Planning a Major

Majoring in sociology takes careful planning. Here are some suggestions.
  • Keep in mind when required courses are offered:
    • SO 101 is offered every semester.
    • SO 226 is offered every Fall and in Spring of even-numbered years.
    • SO 227 is offered every Fall and in Spring of odd-numbered years.
    • SO 324 is offered every Fall.
    • SO 375 is offered every Fall (and only in the Fall).
  • You will need to plan especially carefully if you are planning to study abroad or at another program in the United States. Review the department's policies on study abroad if you are considering studying overseas. Click here for study abroad policies
  • SB 315 Work, Family, and Organization may be taken for either sociology or business credit; SA 355 Language in Society may be counted for either sociology or anthropology credit.
  • Skidmore's sociology curriculum groups electives into three major areas: Social Interaction, Social Issues, and Social Institutions. Your academic program will be better balanced if you take at least one elective in each of these areas. Here are sociology electives in each area:
