MicroCase Data Files

Skidmore College has about 300 MicroCase data files for research and other academic use by Skidmore faculty and students. Included are the entire General Social Surveys since 1972, data for all American states and counties and major cities, international data, cross-cultural data for preindustrial societies, historical data, and Congressional data.

There is no cost to faculty and students using these files. Feel free to use them for term papers in any Skidmore course in any department. These data files can be either used directly with the MicroCase statistical package or exported for use with other statistical packages such as SPSS.

NOTE: Skidmore's MicroCase data files are available only to members of the Skidmore community. If you are not associated with Skidmore, I suggest that you contact the MicroCase folks via their Website at www.microcase.com.

U.S. States, Counties, and Cities

States

Over 700 variables for the 50 states. In addition to 1990 census data, the set includes magazine circulation rates, crime statistics, church membership data, and health statistics. Special module on education and welfare.

Counties of the United States

Over 450 variables for the 3,141 counties in the United States. Wide range of demographic, social, and economic variables.

State Data Files

Over 450 variables for the counties of each state. Each state is a separate file.

Official 1990 census release for the 50 states. A sample of the population who completed the long form of the census questionnaire.

STF1-90

Official 1990 census release for the 50 states. Constructed from information on the short form of the census questionnaire.

US Metropolitan Statistical Areas

290 variables for the 268 Metropolitan Statistical Areas.

Chicago Community Areas

343 variables for Chicago's 77 Community Areas. Historical subset has data from 1920s to present. Data on race and ethnicity, delinquency, family structure, commute rate, income, property values, etc. A historical subset lets you trace trends from the 1920s to the present. Also variables on social disorganization, deviance, venereal disease and alcoholism from the 1930s. A secondary data file has raw data from the 1990 census.

Cities of Los Angeles

150 variables for the 133 cities of the Greater Los Angeles area. Secondary data file has raw data from the 1990 census long form.

Seattle Census Tracts

213 variables for the 123 census tracts of Seattle, Washington. Secondary data file has raw data from the 1990 census long form.

St. Louis Neighborhoods

Two data sets: variables for 49 census tracts groups in St. Louis City and County; and variables for 11 counties and the City of St. Louis in the St. Louis Standard Metropolitan Area. Variables range from Census data to rates of Italian restaurants and martial arts studios.

Yorkadelphia

Over 450 variables for the 49 counties making up the "megacity" of New York and Philadelphia that sprawls across parts of Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.


Historical Data Files

Colonial America

52 variables for the original 13 colonies plus Maine and Vermont for the period 1770-1790. Based on colonial censuses and first federal census. Data include religion, ethnicity, race, and slavery.

American Cities: 1900-1906

111 variables for the 82 largest American cities in 1902. Variables include religion, crime, police staffing. fires, education and schools, libraries, health, suicide, population growth, industrialization, immigration, etc. Especially strong in areas of economic development, family, and fertility.

America 1920-1990

Over 500 variables for the 50 states. Variables range from standard demographic data to rates of lynchings to per cent of labor force employed in pool halls and as piano tuners.

Victorian England and Wales

59 variables for the 44 counties (shires) in the period 1840-1860. Variables (known as "moral statistics" at the time) pertain to population, religion, stratification, economy, family, education, and crime.


International Data Files

Nations of the Globe

Data the 174 nations with populations 200,000 or more. Variables include demographic, social, economic, political, health information.

Latin America

Regional from the Nations of the Globe data file. Over 90 variables for the 17 continental and Catholic nations of Latin America. Topics include agriculture, modernization, suicide, mortality, fertility, and women in the labor force.

States of Mexico

Data for the 31 states plus federal district. Primary file has 112 variables describing rates. A secondary file of "raw data" has 276 variables. Data are from the "statistical abstract" of Mexico.

Provinces & Territories of Canada

176 variables pertaining to Canada's 10 provinces and 2 territories and 94 variables for the 25 Canadian Census Metropolitan Areas. Also includes subsets of variables for the 1920s, 1940s, and 1960s to allow trend studies.

Canadian Cities

Data for the 25 Census Metropolitan Areas of Canada.

Countries of Europe

Regional data for the 38 primary nations of Europe after reorganization of Eastern Europe. From the Nations of the Globe data file.

Countries of Africa

Regional data for 54 nations. From the Nations of the Globe data file.

Countries of Asia

Regional data for 40 nations. From the Nations of the Globe data file.

Prefectures of Japan

Over 550 variables for the 47 prefectures of Japan. This data set spans a broad range of subjects: religion, education, stratification and inequality, family structures, modernization, urbanization, economic development, suicide. Crime, etc.

States of India

Primary file has 190 variables for the 22 states and 9 union territories of India. Secondary file has 291 variables.

Modern China

Over 140 variables for the 30 provinces of China. These data come from large surveys and the most recent Chinese census. Useful for examining issues concerning fertility, shifts in family and household structure, health, and the spread of schools and education in China. Fertility data are from 1940 through 1980s.
