limestone quarry at Robben Island

The limestone quarry at Robben Island. A site made famous by the political prisoners who worked there regularly with pick and spade in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Quarried lime was used to resurface the Island's roads. Source: Official Robben Island Web Site

pile of rocks at Robben Island

In February 1995, more than 1,000 ex-political prisoners gathered together again on Robben Island. To mark the occasion, the men picked up stones and small rocks in the quarry area and placed them in a pile near the entrance to the quarry, as a memorial to their years of struggle and hardship.
