The Porter Presidential Scholarships in Science and Mathematics

The Porter Presidential Scholarships in Science and Mathematics are awarded on the basis of superior accomplishment and exceptional promise, without regard to financial need. Each Porter Scholar is awarded a $40,000 scholarship ($10,000 per year).

While scholarship recipients are not required to major in a scientific or mathematical discipline, they are expected to demonstrate serious research and to participate actively in academic and cocurricular activities in these fields.

Porter Scholars are automatically considered for membership in Skidmore's Honors Forum, a program of enriched academic and cocurricular opportunities for highly motivated students. The Porter Scholarship and Honors Forum offerings range from Honors-designated courses to special lectures, field trips, and even housing choices that foster intellectual and social interaction among ambitious and talented students.

All applicants for admission are considered for the Porter Scholarships. Scholarship candidates are selected on the strength of their admissions applications, with emphasis on course work in science and math, standardized test scores, teacher recommendations, and pursuits beyond the classroom. To be considered for a scholarship, candidates must also write an essay that discusses their interests in science and/or mathematics, the experience(s) that sparked those interests, and what they have done to pursue them. A faculty committee determines the awardees from the applicant pool each spring and informs them of their selection by April 1.

The application deadline for admission is January 15. For more information, please call 1 800-867-6007 or inquire by e-mail to admissions@skidmore.edu. You can also contact Professor of Psychology Hugh J. Foley, Ph.D. at (518) 580-5308 or hfoley@skidmore.edu.

Meet Porter Scholar Jason Lowenstein '03

Bill Standish and Porter Scholar Jason Lowenstein"I got a lot of personal attention in high school," says Jason Lowenstein. That's why his advisor recommended Skidmore. "People here are so friendly," he says. "And you form a bond with your professors; you can talk to them about anything-the doors are always open."

What really inspired him, though, was his visit. "I fell in love with the campus. It's what I always thought of as a college-the outdoors, the beautiful dorms." And when Jason was awarded one of five Porter Presidential Scholarships in Science and Mathematics, the decision was made.

As a physics major, he's taken courses in areas he'd never imagined: native american art, visual language, "even modern dance!" Still, he adds, "Physics is the thing for me." So he will spend his junior year at Dartmouth College as part of the Skidmore/Dartmouth 3/2 Engineering Program, return here to finish his bachelor's degree and then complete a master's degree at Dartmouth.

That year away will make it tough to pursue all his interests, says Jason, who is a member of the Honors Forum and a physics tutor, and who also enjoys Skidmore's North Woods and Saratoga Springs. "There's so much to do and enjoy-I'd like to extend my college career a little bit longer!"
