America Reads/America Counts Tutoring Program

Skidmore College receives Federal Work-Study funding from the Department of Education to design a community-based project in the Saratoga Springs area to help boost literacy and reading levels within the elementary schools. As an America Reads/ America Counts tutor you can share a love of reading with a child; teach a child additional math skills; connect with the off-campus community; and gain skills that improve your resume while having a fun and challenging experience.

Eligibility for the Program
Only students with federal work-study are eligible to participate in this program. Please contact the Student Employment Coordinator if you are not sure you receive federal work-study.

Getting Paid As A Tutor
A Work Agreement needs to be completed (along with the other required employment paperwork) before a student can begin tutoring in the elementary schools. A student's earnings are covered 100% by our federal funding, and therefore is cost-free to the local school district.

Tutors are required to submit tutoring hours through the Student Auto-Time system along with submitting a paper timesheet to the the Office of Student Aid and Family Finance. Additional paper timesheets can be picked up from the office or downloaded and printed. A tutor is required to complete a paper timesheet for each pay period.

Your Responsibilities as a Tutor
As an America Reads/America Counts tutor you are a representative of Skidmore College, and not only the elementary school will rely upon you, but more important, the children you work with will rely upon you. As a tutor you must be willing to commit yourself to this worthwhile program. Treat your tutoring as seriously as you would your academic work. You will be gaining valuable experience, performing a valuable service to the community, along with helping children learn to read and count.
