Give and Go 2008 is a huge success

On May 10th, 16th and 18th Skidmore and Saratoga Springs community volunteers collected used goods that students left behind at the end of the year.  Give and Go donated these goods to local non-profits where the they will be reused or resold.  Most importantly, the program's purpose is to keep the material out of the landfill. During the last week of school, student volunteers set up donation sites in the residence halls and apartments.  Throughout the week students dropped off their donations, which included: clothing, small appliances, refrigerators, shoes, food…the list goes on and on.  At the conclusion of the program, Give and Go diverted 15 van loads of material from the landfill and offered Skidmore students an opportunity to give back to their community.  Some collection highlights include:  24 refrigerators, 40 fans, 12 coffee makers, 14 toasters, 92 lamps, 16 full-length mirrors, 50 picture frames, 15 printers, 13 power-strips, 11 phones, 14 clock radios, and 10 ironing boards.

This year's donation recipients were the Salvation Army, The Backstretch Employee Service Team and the Ballston Spa Animal Shelter.  The Salvation Army is hosting a tag sale of these goods on Friday, June 6th from 9am-4pm and Saturday, June 7th from 9am-2pm at 27 Woodlawn Avenue in Saratoga Springs.

Thank you to all who volunteered for the Give and Go this year! Your help is crucial to the success of the program.  We would also like to thank the Liedke Moving and Storage Company for their generous truck donation.

The Give and Go program helped Skidmore significantly reduce the amount of waste produced at the end of the semester in addition to supporting some local non-profits.  If you would like to volunteer or help plan for next year's Give and Go program please contact Skidmore's Campus Sustainability Coordinator, Erica Fuller at efuller@skidmore.edu or 580-5865.
