Waste
Give and GO Program: What you don't want, someone else might need. Give and Go is a program designed to capture the used goods that students leave behind at the end of the year and bring it to a local nonprofit where the goods can be reused or resold. This program diverts tons of material from the landfill and gives Skidmore students an opportunity to give back to their community.
Give and GO 2009
Thank you to all those who volunteered for the Give and Go 2009! We would also like to thank Liedke Moving Co. for their generous truck donation. We had over 30 volunteers and collected 5 small moving vans of reusable goods.
The Give and Go program helped Skidmore significantly reduce the amount of waste produced at the end of the semester.
Recycling: Skidmore recycles or reuses mixed office paper, newspaper, magazines, cardboard, plastic, glass, aluminum cans, electronics, batteries and some furniture. In 2006, Skidmore improved the recycling program by purchasing more recycling containers and hiring four students to serve as recycling coordinators/educators in addition to the facilities recycling staff. Skidmore also donates used Skidmore cell phones to a local charitable organization. Skidmore also recycles its asphalt for road base and shoulders.
Dorm Renovation Project Donation: This summer Skidmore donated 144 beds, desks, chairs and bureaus to several local organizations.
Skidmore Trash Audit: On April 18, 2008 the Skidmore Environmental Action Club performed a trash audit by sorting through 30 bags of waste from academic and residential buildings on campus. They separated the contents into mixed recycling, paper and trash on Case Green. The purpose of the activity was to raise awareness about our recycling program and help people realize how much of our trash is recyclable. During the trash audit, Skidmore community members engaged in conversations about our recycling program and saw firsthand some of the recyclable materials our community throws away.
